Brown’s the word
My bestie was in town over the weekend from Sydney and he wanted to suss out the original Belle’s Hot Chicken store in Melbourne. There are a few stores that this restaurant opened and the first one is in Fitzroy. The place looked like a diner which was a nice touch compared regular restaurants. We were given a booth seat and we started to look through the extremely short menu in front of us. Even their drinks menu is longer than the food menu.
There is a variety of spiciness that can be added to the fried chicken. I took the medium as I didn’t really want my tummy to churn as Cam and I would need to survive the journey back to Geelong that night. Cam had the mild. My bestie also had the mild, and his friend had the hot.
The meal was literally a ‘brown meal‘. Everything we ordered was fried except for the pickles and the sauces. All different shades of brown. The spicier the chicken, the darker the brown. A colour enthusiast would be happy to point out and name the 10 shades of brown that were sitting before us that night!
We started off with the chicken ribs, and they were goooooooood… It was so tasty and it was not overcooked. We slurped it up like we have never eaten before that night. However, it seems like that was when everyone’s (except me) experience took a slight downturn when they received their mains. Apparently, everyone’s chicken was dry except for mine. I ordered chicken drumsticks and it as nice and tender beneath that BROWN and hard exterior. So I was the lucky one! The sauces were average as we have been to other restaurants that also have the same type of sauces.
Throughout the meal, Cam and I did think that what they are serving is the same as the Hot Chicken Project in Geelong (Vic) that doesn’t have a restaurant website. They have the same concept and serving styles from the shades of brown to the pickets to the chips, to the basket that the food is served in!
Anyway, we gave Belle’s Hot Chicken a 6.5 out of 10. What prevented it from falling further were the chicken ribs, my drumsticks and their sweet and sour drinks.
